About Bexley

The London Borough of Bexley is situated in the south-east of London, in a key location in the Thames Gateway between major growth areas in London and Kent. The population is currently estimated to be almost 250,000, and the borough covers an area of 23 square miles (6,400 hectares).  We are a diverse and growing borough. By 2030 our population will be over 260,000 and almost 300,000 by 2050.

With Bexleyheath at its centre, Bexley has four major district centres – Crayford, Erith, Sidcup and Welling. Transport connections are excellent both into and out of central London.  Bexley is one of the greenest boroughs in London with over 100 parks and 1,100 hectares of Green Belt Land. Bexley is close to the M25 as well as access to Europe through the high-speed Channel Tunnel Rail Link station at Ebbsfleet and the A2/A20 run through the borough. The arrival of the Elizabeth Line providing services to Abbey Wood provides fast and reliable links into central London and beyond.

Bexley has a wealth of amenities, ranging from libraries and historic buildings through to modern leisure centres, a wide range of restaurants, cafes and bars and a varied range of shops spread across 52 neighbourhood shopping centres.  Just a short drive away is the fabulous Bluewater, Europe’s largest and most innovative retail and leisure destination.

Education in Bexley is also given a high priority, with 59 primary schools, and 15 secondary schools (four of which are selective in their intake) and one all-through school in the borough. There are also six state-maintained special schools in Bexley.

London South East Colleges are the main provider of further education in Bexley and across south-east London. They have two campuses located in the borough - one in Erith and a specialist construction campus at Holly Hill in Belvedere. The Learning & Enterprise College Bexley is the main adult education institution in the borough.

30% of Bexley residents are young people (under the age of 25) which makes us the 16th youngest borough in London. Bexley has the 5th highest rate of people aged 65 and over in London at 16.6%. This number will increase to 21.8% in 2050.

Bexley is a diverse borough; its ethnic minority population is increasing and will continue to do so – this is in line with our neighbouring boroughs and the rest of London.

  • 24.3% of our residents were Black and Asian Multi-Ethnic in 2021 and this will rise to 30.6% in 2050.

  • The north of the borough has a diverse population - Thamesmead East, Belvedere and Slade Green and North End wards have the highest population of ethnic minority residents.

  • 86% of residents speak English at home as their first language. This is higher than the London average but has gradually decreased by 7% since 2012. The top 3 non-English languages spoken in Bexley are Punjabi, Polish and Chinese dialect.
